Shall I Go To A & E or call INJURY-FIX?
Your injury may be serious when:

– You are unable to support any weight through your affected leg when attempting to walk 1 hour after the injury occurred.
– You cannot out your heel on the ground when attempting to walk 24 hours after the injury occurred.
– You are unable to rise up on the toes of your affected leg 48 hours after the injury occurred.
– Your pain gets worse over 2 days of you generally feel unwell.

If 1 or more of the above points apply to you, seek medical advice. In the meantime refer to Day 1 for the application of RICE to limit further damage. If NONE of the above points apply to you, you are an ideal candidate for self treatment.

Self Treatment

If your injury happened 3 days ago or less, start the treatment programme at Day 1.

If walking does not cause any pain, continue to walk with care. If walking is painful, rest for 24 hours. The use of a walking stick will help when you have to walk short distances. Use a heel raise to ease the stress on your achilles tendon. There are various ways to raise your heel. You may wear shoes with a 2 to 3 cm heel or insert a heel raise into a flat shoe. You can buy a commercial heel raise, insert a piece of carpet cut to your heel size, or use 2 folded handkerchiefs.

2 | Day 2 - 3

Apply relative rest, ice, compression and elevation following each exercise session.

3 | Day 4 - 8

4 | Day 4 - 8 cont..

Continue with the application of relative rest, ice, compression and elevation following each exercise session.

5 | Day 9 - 21

6 | Day 9 - 21 cont..

As your pain and swelling decrease, you may reduce the number of times you apply RICE.PREVENTION OF RE-INJURY If your work or recreational activities involve running or jumping, a gradual build up over 3 weeks is essential. This allows your achilles tendon to fully regain the ability to perform these more demanding tasks without the danger of re-injury. If, despite these measures your injury recurs, seek advice from a physiotherapist to determine whether other factors are contributing to this condition.
