Shall I Go To A & E or call INJURY-FIX?
Your injury may be serious when:

– You have severe pain or swelling on either side of your shin which does not ease with rest.
– The foot of your injured leg feels numb or cold compared to the other side.
– You are unable to rise on the toes of the injured leg 24 hours after the injury occurred.
– Your pain gets worse over 2 days or you generally feel unwell.

If 1 or more of the above points apply to you, seek medical advice. In the meantime refer to Day 1 for the application of RICE to limit further damage. If NONE of the above points apply to you, you are an ideal candidate for self-treatment.

Self Treatment

If your injury happened 3 days ago or less, start the treatment programme at Day 1. If your injury happened more than 3 days ago, start the treatment programme at Day 4 to Day 8.

This allows your shin muscle to fully regain the ability to perform these more demanding tasks without the danger of re-injury. If despite these measures your injury recurs, seek advice from a physiotherapist to determine whether other factors are contributing to this condition. If you received a direct blow to your shin and intend to return to contact sports, wear shin pads to protect re-injury.
